India the Global Power Gets Prime Importance in US Security Strategy

With great efforts from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on diplomatic positioning of the country, India is emerging as a ‘Global Power’ in international arena. Recently, several international agencies have upgraded India’s economic outlook. This is direct impact on country’s place among the global hierarchy of the power.

Recently, US President Donald Trump unveiled the USA’s new National Security Strategy. In this strategy document, the US has welcomed India’s rise as a “leading global power”. By highlighting ‘lending power’, the US has clearly highlighted India as economic superpower. The new National Security Strategy document says that the US will increase its cooperation with India under the US-Japan-India-Australia quadrilateral dialogue. President Trump’s new strategy emphasizes that the US will “expand our defense and security cooperation with India, a Major Defense Partner… and support India’s growing relationships throughout the region.” Clearly, India has became regional superpower in Asia. The recently adopted new strategy further says, “We (the US) will deepen our strategic partnership with India and support its leadership role in Indian Ocean security and throughout the broader region,”.

The US-Japan-India-Australia quadrilateral dialogue mentioned in the new strategy document, might be designed to corner and contain China. However, it suits the Indian purpose too. Recent deadlock in Doklam with China and its resolution has highlighted New Delhi’s power positioning in regional context. The US’ new security strategy has also explained its relationship with India’s arch-rival Pakistan. It says, the US will continue pushing Pakistan to act more against terrorism and be “responsible steward” of its nuclear weapons.

Now when the US has relied heavily on India, the nation as certainly became the undeclared Global Superpower.
